1140 steel bar and rod, known as AISI 1140, is medium-carbon steel with about 0.38-0.44% carbon, 0.60-0.90% manganese, 0.040% sulfur, and 0.040% phosphorus and traces of silicon and chromium. Its tensile strength lies between 570-700 MPa, and yield strength varies between 310-460 MPa, along with hardness lying between 140-180 HB. It shows good machinability and has moderate toughness with a medium to high strength-to-weight ratio, thus proving suitable for structural applications.
