What is High Speed Steel M42 Bars ?

HSS M42 will have ~8% cobalt, ~4% molybdenum, tungsten, chromium, vanadium, and high carbon (~1.0%). Due to the presence of cobalt, M42 has hardness at higher temperature compared to numerous other grades of HSS. It is capable of attaining hardness levels ~64–66 HRC after proper heat treatment, and it has excellent wear resistance, toughness, and red hardness. The tensile and yield strengths in hardened state are very high, which allows extended use under heavy thermal load.
