Chung Metal offers High Speed Steel T42 bars, a high alloy tool steel that provides excellent performance in cutting and wear applications. Our T42 rods are heat-treated, precision ground, and certified for mechanical and metallurgical requirements. Machining industries and tool manufacturers rely on T42 for tool blanks and stock utilized in applications where toughness and hardness under thermal stress are required.
HSS T42 is generally a tungsten or molybdenum alloyed, high-vanadium tool steel with a high carbon content (e.g. ~1.2%). It can attain hardness of ~62–67 HRC in fully heat treated condition, and it has good resistance to wear and good hardness retention at high temperatures. Toughness is relatively lower than in softer steels, but the alloying allows for improved tool life under abrasion or higher-speed cutting.

Yes, T42 Alloy High-Speed Steel Bars can be heat treated. They are typically hardened through heat treatment processes like quenching and tempering to enhance hardness, wear resistance, and performance.
Welding T42 High-Speed Steel Bars is challenging due to their high carbon content and hardness. If welding is required, preheating and post-weld heat treatment are often necessary to prevent cracking and ensure strength.
T42 High-Speed Steel Bars should be stored in a dry, cool environment to prevent rust and corrosion. They should be kept off the ground, ideally on wooden or plastic pallets, and protected from moisture and extreme temperatures.
Applied in heavy-duty cutting, reamers, milling cutters, broaches, hob cutters, and other such tools exposed to heavy abrasive wear. Also utilized in die cutting, form tools, and shape tools. T42 bars are selected when there is a requirement for longer tool life in comparison to regular tool steels, particularly in tough machining conditions.
