Nitronic is a trademarked name for a series of nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steels that provide a superior balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness. These steels have better mechanical and chemical properties than common grades such as 304 and 316. Nitronic alloys are 18–23% chromium, 8–14% nickel-containing, high-nitrogen stainless steels with molybdenum and manganese additions. Nitronic grades give 304 and 316 twice the yield strength with tensile strength to 1000 MPa. They are non-magnetic and possess good resistance to pitting, stress corrosion, and galling. The addition of nitrogen strengthens without losing ductility, hence suitable for heavy-duty industrial applications.
