Grade 431 is a martensitic alloy with stainless properties and high strength, applicable to challenging structural and mechanical components. Stainless Steel 431 contains approximately 12–14 % chromium, 0.15‑0.40 % carbon, and approximately 2‑3 % nickel, with manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur in small quantities. Upon proper quenching and tempering, it possesses high tensile strength ranging from 850‑1000 MPa, yield strength approximately 600‑750 MPa, and elongation usually 10‑20 %. Hardness can be approximately 45‑50 HRC. Corrosion resistance is better than most martensitic steels but inferior to austenitic grades; retains good fatigue strength.
