Chung Metal produces Stainless Steel 317 square bars and rods, an austenitic, molybdenum-containing alloy providing greater corrosion resistance in aggressive media. Our 317 material is produced to close tolerances, guaranteed chemical and mechanical integrity, and superior surface finish. Generally applied in chemical, petrochemical, and coastal conditions, these rods and square bars are utilized in structural, shaft, and component applications for resistance in harsh environments. Being weldable and formable, Chung Metal’s 317 bars enable fabrications within industries that require superior pitting resistance over 316.
SS 317 is ~18–20% chromium, ~11–14% nickel, ~3–4% molybdenum, and ~0.08% carbon, with added manganese, silicon, and minor elements. Mechanical properties: tensile strength ~515–700 MPa, yield ~205–300 MPa, elongation ~40%. Hardness moderate. The addition of molybdenum provides improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride media over 316. Ductility and weldability are good; the alloy is well adapted to aggressive chemical environments.

Yes, Stainless Steel 317 square bars can be welded using conventional welding methods. However, pre-heating and post-weld heat treatment may be required to avoid cracking.
Yes, Stainless Steel 317 square rods can be heat-treated, typically through solution annealing. However, they are not hardenable by heat treatment like some other stainless steels.
Stainless Steel 317 Square Bars offer excellent corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and acids, along with high strength and durability. They are widely used in chemical, petrochemical, and food processing industries.
317 square rods and bars are utilized in chemical process equipment, piping supports, corrosive plants’ structural frames, and marine structure. They’re suitable for areas that are exposed to chloride-bearing or acidic media more severe than 316 can withstand. Usage is in desalination plants, chemical reactors, seawater piping supports, and architectural structures in marine environment. 317 is applied in the oil & gas industry for downhole connectors, process piping, and sulfuric or hydrochloric acid-contacting components. Its strong corrosion resistance makes it an ideal option where excellent durability in aggressive environments is required.
