Stainless Steel 431 has 15–17% chromium, 1.25–2.5% nickel, and ≤ 0.20% carbon. It is magnetic and heat-treatable to achieve tensile strength of up to 1100 MPa, yield strength of about 700–800 MPa. It has an elongation of 12–20%, and hardness of up to 40 HRC. SS 431 has excellent ductility and impact resistance, particularly after quenching and tempering. Its resistance to corrosion exceeds that of most other martensitic grades, and it is notably good in marine or mildly acidic environments.
