SS 440C is high-carbon (~0.95‑1.20 %) stainless steel with chromium content of about 16‑18 %, trace amounts of manganese, silicon, and carbon-adjusted to achieve maximum hardenability. Tensile strength will be more than 900‑1100 MPa after heat treatment (quenching + tempering); hardness often approaches HRC 55‑60. Yield strength is high (~800‑1000 MPa), elongation comparatively low (~8‑15 %) with high hardness. Corrosion resistance moderate, superior to plain carbon steel but less than austenitic grades; suitable where wear, edge retention, and hardness are more important than corrosion exposure.
