AISI 4145 is chromium–molybdenum alloy steel containing nearly 0.43% C, 0.90% Cr, 0.25% Mo, and Mn, Si, S, P. It can achieve tensile strengths of ~1,000–1,200 MPa, yield strengths ~800–1,000 MPa, and elongation ~12–15% in quenched and tempered state. Tempering hardness can achieve 30–45 HRC. The alloy possesses greater hardenability than 4140, retaining the strength in larger section sizes. The alloy possesses good toughness, fatigue strength, and machinability in softer temper conditions.
