AISI 8630 alloy steel bars and rods find extensive usage in heavy-duty shafts, gears, crankshafts, and structural components demanding high strength and fatigue and wear resistance. They are utilized in the production of automotive crank and camshafts, in gear blanks, and in drive train components. In power generation and aeronautics, 8630 finds applications in tie rods, supports, and high-stress fittings. It also finds applications in heavy machinery parts, forging blanks, and high-strength fasteners and studs. Due to its capacity to hold surface treatments and maintain toughness, it is well qualified for rigorous mechanical and industrial assemblies.
AISI 4340 is an Ni‑Cr‑Mo alloy steel having typical composition of ~0.38‑0.43% C, 1.65% Ni, 0.80% Cr, 0.25% Mo, with Mn, Si, S, P as additional elements. In quenched and tempered condition, tensile strength is up to 950–1,250 MPa, yield strength ~850–1,100 MPa, and elongation ~10–15%. Hardness between 300–380 HB (or more per temper) can be achieved. It provides outstanding toughness, impact strength, and resistance to fatigue. The alloy machine well in softer temper, and accepts additional treatments (induction hardening, nitriding) well.
