Chung Metal produces high-quality Stainless Steel 416 Hex Bars, a free-machining martensitic stainless steel suitable for machining at high speeds and part manufacturing. SS 416 has the best machinability in all stainless steels and is suitable for turned components, screws, shafts, and valves. Chung Metal produces hex bars to exacting precision and clean hexagonal finishes, making it convenient for assembly and reliable torque control. These bars are utilized mainly in automated machine systems, general engineering, and mechanical uses where surface finish and speed are critical.
SS 416 has 12–14% chromium, 0.15% carbon, and added sulfur (0.15–0.35%) for improved machinability. It gives tensile strength of 550–750 MPa, yield strength of 275–400 MPa, and hardness of up to 30 HRC after heat treatment. It is ferromagnetic and gives moderate corrosion resistance, appropriate for dry applications. The hex bar shape is useful for easy handling in mechanical assemblies. Chung Metal supplies these bars in annealed or tempered conditions, which are optimized for rapid machining, tapping, and threading.

416 hex bars are utilized in machine screws, valve parts, fasteners, shafts, pins, and gears. Due to their high machinability, they are a material of choice for CNC, high-volume manufacturing lines, and automatic lathes. The hex pattern is best suited for structural joints, precision tool holders, and custom mechanical fittings. SS 416 also finds usage in appliance components, industrial tools, and hydraulic systems where quick processing and dimensional precision are essential. Chung Metal provides SS 416 hex bars in a variety of sizes, finishes, and machining conditions to cater to high-efficiency manufacturing requirements.
SS 416 hex bars offer excellent machinability due to their high sulfur content, allowing for faster cutting speeds and reduced tool wear. They also provide good corrosion resistance, making them ideal for applications requiring precision and durability in harsh environments.
SS 416 contains higher sulfur content for improved machinability, but this reduces its corrosion resistance compared to other stainless steel grades like SS 304 or SS 316. The sulfur content interferes with the formation of a protective oxide layer, making SS 416 more susceptible to corrosion in aggressive environments.
SS 416 hex bars are commonly used in the aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries. Their primary applications include shafts, valves, pump components, and fasteners. Due to their excellent machinability, they are ideal for producing precise parts in high-volume machining environments, especially where moderate corrosion resistance is required.
