SS 431 is resistant to stress corrosion cracking and exhibits high mechanical strength after heat treatment. SS 431 is composed of 15–17% chromium, 1.25–2.5% nickel, and a maximum of 0.20% carbon. It is ferromagnetic and can be heat-treated to tensile strengths of 850–1100 MPa with a yield strength of 600–800 MPa. Elongation is between 10–20%, providing good impact resistance and toughness. SS 431 withstands mild chemical, water, and marine exposures. The hexagonal shape accommodates mechanical torque and structural integrity.
