Chung Metal offers Stainless Steel 440C Hex Bars, a martensitic stainless steel with high carbon content intended to have maximum hardness and wear life. Manufactured in Da Nang, Vietnam, 440C is heat-treatable to very high hardness and is applied to precision tooling, bearings, and valve components. Chung Metal provides dimensional tolerances, clean surface finish, and uniform metallurgy for severe tool and die applications.
440C has 16–18% chromium, up to 1.2% carbon, and negligible nickel. It can be hardened to Rockwell hardness of 58–60 HRC. Tensile strength may be more than 750 MPa in hardened state. It possesses moderate corrosion resistance but excellent wear and abrasion resistance. It is ferromagnetic and needs tempering after heat treatment.
