SS 431 has a composition of 15–17% chromium, 1.25–2.5% nickel, and up to 0.20% carbon. It is ferromagnetic and can be hardened to attain tensile strengths of 850–1100 MPa and yield strength of 600–800 MPa. Elongation is between 10–20%, with good toughness in the quenched and tempered state. The hollow structure maintains these mechanical properties with minimum material weight. SS 431 provides satisfactory corrosion resistance, particularly in water and mild chemical conditions. It can be welded in the annealed condition and machined after heat treatment.
