Chung Metal supplies Stainless Steel 303 round bars and rods, an austenitic stainless steel grade especially modified for enhanced machinability. 303 contains sulfur or selenium to improve chip breakage and machining performance. Machined with strict chemistry and finish control, our 303 rods assist customers in precision-machining industries. The rods are best suited for shaft production, fasteners, and turned parts where the speed of machining, precision, and surface finish are critical. With decent corrosion resistance and excellent machinability, Chung Metal’s 303 rods are relied upon for high-volume precision components.
SS 303 has ~17–19% chromium, ~8–10% nickel, and additional sulfur (~0.15%) or selenium for increased machinability, with carbon at ~0.15%. In annealed form, tensile strength ~515–750 MPa, yield ~205–310 MPa, elongation ~40%. Hardness moderate. The added sulfur reduces corrosion slightly compared to 304, but carbide precipitation negligible. 303 is readily machinable and has good toughness and formability but cannot be hardened through heat treatment.

303 round bars and rods find application in parts needing heavy machining like screws, shafts, pins, bolts, and fasteners. They find wide application in automobiles, instrumentation, gears, and mechanical systems where machining economy and surface finish are important.
