SS 904L contains ~25‑28 % chromium, ~20‑25 % nickel, ~4‑5 % molybdenum, ~1‑2 % copper, very little carbon (<0.02 %), possibly nitrogen strengthened. It has tensile strength approximately 500‑700 MPa, yield strength ~200‑300 MPa, elongation ~40‑50 %. Hardness is generally ~150‑230 HB based on finish and treatment. It has excellent impact toughness, and good ductility over wide temperature ranges. Corrosion resistance is exceptional in chloride, sulphuric acid, and seawater exposures, with high resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
