Stainless Steel 422 has around 12–14% chromium, 1–2% molybdenum, and 0.25% carbon at most, with tungsten and vanadium as a high-temperature strengthening addition. Stainless Steel 422 is a martensitic type of stainless steel that can be hardened through heat treatment. Standard tensile strength is 900–1100 MPa, with greater than 650 MPa yield strength. The alloy will retain mechanical properties at high temperatures and has resistance to oxidation through 650°C. It is ferromagnetic and has moderate corrosion resistance. Elongation is 12–18%, and it can be hardened by quenching and tempering.
